The Kingdom Message of Jesus — What He Actually Preached

Before Jesus healed anyone. Before he performed a single miracle. Before he chose his disciples.

He preached.

And what he preached was not what most churches preach today.

The First Words of Jesus' Ministry

In Mark 1:14-15, the very first recorded words of Jesus' public ministry are:

"The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel."

Not: "Accept me as your personal Savior."
Not: "Attend your local church."
Not: "Follow these religious rules."

The Kingdom of God is at hand.

This was the core message. Everything else — the healings, the teachings, the parables, the miracles — was in service of this announcement. Jesus came to establish a Kingdom, and he wanted everyone to know it had arrived.

What "Repent" Actually Means

The Greek word translated "repent" is metanoia (μετάνοια). It literally means to change your mind — to adopt a completely new framework for thinking about reality.

Jesus was not asking people to feel guilty. He was asking them to change their operating system — to stop thinking like subjects of Rome or members of a religious institution, and start thinking like citizens of the Kingdom of God.

That is a total transformation. And it is available to anyone willing to change their mind.

The Kingdom Message in the Parables

The majority of Jesus' parables begin with "The Kingdom of God is like..." He used stories about:

Every parable was designed to reveal how the Kingdom operates — how it grows, how it values people, how it distributes resources, how it deals with those who accept or reject it.

The Kingdom is not a future event. It is a present reality. Jesus was teaching people how to see it, enter it, and operate within it.

Why This Changes Everything

If Christianity is primarily about going to heaven when you die, then the focus is on the afterlife.

If Christianity is primarily about the Kingdom of God — present, active, transforming every domain of life — then the focus is on now. On how you steward your resources, your health, your relationships, your calling. On what it means to live as a citizen of an eternal Kingdom in a temporary world.

That shift changes everything. And it is the shift that Kahu Phil Stephens has been teaching from Molokaʻi, Hawaiʻi for over 30 years.
